Use total time used like a cycling race. Each race like a stage.

I‘d love the idea of a point system, where you pick up points depending on the gap to the race winner. But the system should still be easy to understand. for example: race winner gets 50 points, every second you finish behind the race winner you get 1 point less. let‘s say mazepin wies ahead of latifi, who finishes in second 10 seconds behind mazepin. Mazepin gets 50 points, latifi 40 and so on. If you‘re 50 seconds or more behind the race leader you get zero points. that way (pretty much) everyone has something to drive for all the time, for the race leader to increase the gap to the others and for the midfield cars to try and keep up. would love to see this and know if ham or ver would have won in 2021.

I'd be interested in the old Winston Cup NASCAR Point style format reenvisioned by SlapSh0es, so the Slap Format (excluding Stages). I halfed the points since NASCAR runs with double the field. Positions: 1st 100pt, 2nd 90pt, 3rd 85pt, ..., 19th 5pt, 20th 1pt Bonus: Leading a Lap 5pt, Leading most Laps 5pt, Pole Position 5pt, Fastest Lap 5pt, Fastest Pitstop 5pt. I personally quite like this proposal

Let's not be delulu and admit that Mercedes only kept themself in the fight because F1 changed rules mid-season so RB had to change their car which got APPROVED to be LEGAL and good to go just before the season started, and had their Pit Stops slowed down. Why do they not introduce a rule where a pit stop needs to last at least 90 seconds, like in endurance racing, when they care about safety so much? And while we are at it, let's introduce a speed limit as well, make it illegal to overtake on the right of another car and so on...

Us NASCAR fans actually really hate the playoff system. It’s only the casuals that really like it. I don’t even know why we still have it around it’s an abomination to society.

I was playing the other day with the point systems in F1, simply changing the amount of points per position. I was surprised that it doesn't matter how many points you assign to each position, the top ~5-10 drivers always stays the same. It doesn't even matter if you make the proportions ridiculous (like giving first place 50 points, second place 49, third place 12), or even if you give more points to lower positions. Even swapping the top 3 (1st place 15, 2nd place 18, 3rd place 25), or swapping 1st and 5th positions, or simply not awarding points to the 1st, the champion each year is almost always the same.

Now I'm trying to improve your system, making it completely alike chess Elo. I decided to take driver's result not comparatively to teammate but according to race finish. So, win is 1.00, 2nd place is 0.95 and so on to 0.05 for 20th and 0.00 for DNF/DNS/DSQ/21st--. Then, I calculate the estimated number of points per each race: E(A) = 1 / (1 + 10^((R(B) - R(A)) / 400)), where E(A) is estimated number of points per race for driver A, R(A) is current rating of driver A, R(B) is the average rating of all other drivers participated in race. These ratings are taken from after the previous race for drivers participated in the current race. After that, new driver's rating after the current race is calculated: R'(A) = R(A) + K * (S(A) - E(A)), where R'(A) is new value of the driver's rating, R(A) is previous value, S(A) is points driver got actually according to my system from 0 to 1, E(A) is estimated number of points. K is a quotient which can change the whole picture. I decided to specify it for each season as 1000 / number of races (including Indy500 because officially it was F1 race too). It means that in 1950, K = 142.857; and in 2024, K should be 41.667. Every new driver gets 1000 points, and further calculations are applied to this value. Currently, I've finished calculations until 1959, and I got the highest PEAK rating equal 1325 for Alberto Ascari in 1953, and highest END rating equal 1208 for JM Fangio after the end of his career in 1958. It will take me a lot of time to process all the data but I'll come back here with my results.
